This small restaurant located on the Maple Street in Benson, could easily be missed. What this restaurant doesn’t have in size, certainly makes up for it in flavor. Today, Ashley and I went with a friend from work, and enjoyed the brunch experience immensely. Servers were attentive, fast, and friendly. Although this restaurant was crowded, the noise level was not unbearably loud, and we were able to have a discussion at our table without yelling at each other.

Appetizers were unnecessary, but their house frites are something special. They are some of my favorite in Omaha. (Next to Grey Plume’s Duck Fat Fries). Simply served in a bowl, with a barbecue sauce and a mustard dipping sauce, the fries are delicious.

For our mains, I had the Ramen. Ashley had the Croque Madame, and our friend had the Biscuits and Gravy. I chose the Ramen, because I wanted to try something different. Last time I had the Chicken and Waffles, so I decided to expand my horizons. The Ramen was good, a pork broth, with a tender pull apart pork shoulder. I’m not a fan of egg, but cutting into the poached egg made the soup richer and brought out the pork even more. I chose to have the additional Jalapeños and sambal to add spice, but it may have detracted from the soup. Sure it was spicy (I like spicy), but nearer to the bottom, all I could taste was spice. Try it without the spicy add on. I’m sure the result will bring out the pork even more.

The Croque Madame was really generous sized sandwich, with a healthy side of fried potatoes and homemade ketchup. The sandwich itself was well toasted with lots of melted gruyere and ham with an egg fried exactly as I specified- over easy. My only regret was that I didn’t ask for a steak knife as the bottom slice of bread never grew soggy enough to cut without sliding the whole sandwich until I speared the it through with my fork and let the yolk soak through. I almost wish I had ordered an extra egg with it as it tasted wonderful with the yolk, and I also liked dipping the potatoes in the yolk too for the extra richness.

Our friend’s family has roots in the south, and he mentioned that the Biscuits and Gravy reminded him of some he enjoyed in his travels to South Carolina.

One drawback, that I noticed (being in a wheelchair part time), was that it would be very difficult to have a person in a wheelchair maneuver around in this restaurant. Our friend’s mom is in a wheelchair permanently, and thus would have a horrible time getting in and out of this restaurant.

Over all, Lot 2 in Benson has a lot to offer. The staff was courteous, never allowing our glasses to be empty. Reservations are a must. It is a small restaurant, but serves up big flavor with unique dishes that will open up a palate to new tastes.
